In landscape architecture and garden design, a water feature or pond often offer additional benefits to peoples gardens, such as an increased curb appeal, home value, even reducing noise pollution which is due to the calming sound of water overpowering the outside noise from the world.
Before the 18th century they were mostly powered by gravity, other examples were supplied with water using hydraulic rams. Since the 18th century, most of the water features have been powered by pumps. In the past, some of the water features would have been powered by a steam engine but that’s not something everybody has to hand. There is an ever increasing range of innovative designs on the market today as people become more aware of alternate methods, such as solar power. The advantages of using this include environmental benefits, no electrical lines in the garden, and of course free energy.
Most water features of today are typically self-contained, (they do not require water to be plumbed in; rather water is recycled. A water feature may be indoor or outdoor and can be any size you like, from a desk top water fountain to a very large indoor waterfall that covers an entire wall in a commercial building, and can be made from any materials, including stone, granite, stainless steel, resin, and glass. Most water features today are generally electronically so you can combined water and music together.
Gardens are not just for one season they are great for the garden the whole year round so with a strategically placed water feature or pond and by adding a garden lighting scheme you can really brighten up the cold winter months, and by viewing the magic of the water feature or pond from the comfort of your home, you will certainly get all year round pleasure from your garden.
Ponds can make a large impact on the big environmental issues that affect us all: climate change, flooding and pollution. All this, as well as being fantastic for attracting wildlife including newts, frogs, toads and dragonfly.
